SO, it has been awhile for me. Kim and me went to Scranton, PA for a St. Paddy's Day parade with another couple. We stayed with their family. We left Bria our dog with friends for the weekend. Sunday morning I was hanging out and shotting the breeze and my cell phone goes off. I check it and I have a message. So, I check the message and it is the friend that was watching Bria. He had been to Philly the day before and stopped on the side of the turnpike to let his dog and Bria pee. Bria ran off. He tried to catch her and could not. So, he waited by the minivan for her. He fell asleep after awhile and woke up way later. No Bria.
We came back and looked along the pike for her and had no luck. The next day I made some posters and went back to the general area and posted them. Kim called the organizations in the area and the rescue we got Bria from.
Two weeks to the day she went missing and I decided it was time to carry all of her stuff to the basement. With in an hour of put her things away my cell phone rings. It is one of the ladies from angel pets the rescue. She told me some one had found Bria. Kim was standing next to me and she almost had to catch me. I made it to a chair and had Kim call the number I was given. Kim talked to the lady that had found Bria. Her husband is a vet. He thought Bria had a broken leg. We left our house and drove to pick up Bria.
I had to keep telling myself to slow down. We got there in one piece. The lady came out to meet us and took us in their barn to see Bria. Bria looked horrible. She was holding her right hind leg up so high it almost looked like she didn't have a leg. You could see every bone in her body. She smelled very bad. She had an open wound on the broken leg and it was the sorce of the smell. She came hopping right over to us and gave me a big kiss. She hobbled around a little more and I couldn't watch any longer so I picked her up. The lady's husband had joined us by then. Kim was talking to them about when and how they found her. They walked us to the car. They said they were going to keep her and call her "Angel" if nobody claimed her. I promised to bring her back when she got healthy. We said good bye and Kim got in and I put Bria in her lap. Kim mentioned that there had been a six inch snow and sleet storm about a week before while Bria was gone. We were both amazed at the will to live Bria must have.
We rushed her to the emergency vet. They took xrays. Bria had a broken pelvis in two places and a broken leg in two places. She also lost around 5 lbs and only weight 19 lbs. Her face had abrasions. The vet cleaned her up and put a splint on the leg. They gave us anti biotics and pain meds. The vet thought Bria would lose the leg. We went home.
Kim and I took turns sleeping and watching Bria for the next two nights.
Monday morning I took Bria to our vet. Bria was acting like herself by now. The vet was impressed with how high Bria's spirits were. The vet referred us to a orthopedic vet near Philly and said she thought they were the only ones who could save Bria's leg. We got an appointment at 2pm. Kim got off work for a couple hours and went along. We met with the vet and she seemed to think she could save Bria's leg. Even though the break was at lest a week old and all of Bria's leg muscles and been cramped in that position. We had to leave Bria there for two days or so. They were not sure when Bria would go for surgery and said they would call us and let us know. Kim and I said good bye and drove home.
Kim went back to work. I came home and updated everyone in the family. When Kim got home she asked if they had called. they had not. By 8 Kim was very antsy and wanted to call. She did and found out that Bria was done with surgery and starting to wake up. Kim talked to the vet that did the surgery. I should have Kim type up her version for the medical jargon. When they took off the splint they had to debreed the wound on the leg. They had originally planed to put screws in the leg through plates on the bone in two places and there was nothing they could do for the pelvis. As they got into the surgery they decided that one of the breaks was going to heal fine. The other they had to put a plate on either side of the leg on the outside with pins through it. That is because of the wound being infected. Otherwise everything was better then expected.
I called yesterday Tuesday to see how she was doing. The report was nothing but good. Kim was on call last night and will get off today sometime this afternoon. We will go pick up Bria then.
I still can not believe she was found and going to be ok. Just thought this was post worthy.
Our miracle dog Bria will have pics posted later.
